FAQs

A PPV (Positive Pressure Ventilation) fan is a firefighting blower used to remove smoke, heat, and toxic gases from a building by forcing clean air in.

A PPV (positive pressure ventilation) smoke removal fan should be used when there is a need to quickly clear smoke, heat, or toxic gases from a structure to improve visibility and safety for fire and rescue operations.

A PPV (positive pressure ventilation) smoke removal fan should be used at the entry or ventilation points of a building where controlled airflow can be created to push smoke, heat, and toxic gases out of designated exit openings.

Delta Fire PPV fans are commonly used in residential buildings, commercial properties, industrial sites, tunnels, and enclosed spaces where smoke needs to be rapidly cleared.

They are also particularly important in high security environments such as prisons, where controlled ventilation is essential during fire incidents to improve visibility, protect occupants, and support safe firefighting and rescue operations without compromising security

A blower (PPV fan) and an exhauster fan both move air, but they do it in different ways and are used for different ventilation strategies.

A blower, or positive pressure ventilation fan, forces fresh air into a building. This creates higher pressure inside, which pushes smoke, heat, and gases out through controlled exit points. It is typically used at entry points to clear structures quickly and improve visibility for fire and rescue teams.

An exhauster fan works in the opposite way. It removes contaminated air by pulling smoke and gases out of a building, creating negative pressure that draws fresh air in through other openings. This is useful when controlled extraction is needed or when positive pressure ventilation is not suitable.

Choosing between battery, electric, and petrol PPV fans depends on the environment, power availability, and the type of incident.

Delta Fire offers all three types of PPV smoke removal fans, each suited to different operational needs.

Battery powered fans are ideal for rapid deployment, internal firefighting, and confined spaces where cables or fuel engines are impractical. They are quiet, portable, and produce zero emissions, making them useful for quick entry or smoke clearance in sensitive environments.

Electric fans are best where a stable power source is available. They are commonly used for prolonged smoke removal operations, post fire ventilation, and indoor environments where low noise and no exhaust fumes are important.

Petrol powered fans provide the highest airflow and are typically used for large scale incidents or remote locations where maximum performance and independence from external power is required.

The airflow rating needed for effective smoke removal depends on the size and layout of the building, as well as the severity of smoke conditions.

Delta Fire PPV fans are typically rated in cubic metres per hour (m³/h). Smaller spaces such as rooms or domestic properties may require lower airflow units, while larger commercial or industrial buildings need higher capacity fans to move sufficient air volume.

In general, the fan must be powerful enough to create a strong, controlled airflow that fully replaces the contaminated air inside the structure. The larger or more complex the space, the higher the airflow rating required.

The correct selection should always be based on the risk assessment, access points, and ventilation strategy rather than a single fixed figure.

When using fans in contaminated or hazardous workplaces, it is important to ensure safe and controlled ventilation.

Key considerations include the type of hazard such as flammable gases or toxic fumes, correct airflow direction to avoid spreading contaminants, and using suitable equipment for the environment, including explosion safe or low emission fans where required.

Delta Fire ventilation fans should always be selected based on the specific risk, with proper safety procedures and air quality monitoring in place to ensure effective and safe operation.

To maximise ventilation effectiveness, a PPV fan should be positioned outside the entry point, facing into the building at a slight angle.

The airflow cone should fully cover the doorway to create a tight air seal, ensuring fresh air is forced inside and smoke is pushed out through a designated exhaust opening.

Delta Fire PPV fans perform best when there is a clear inlet and outlet path, with doors and windows controlled to direct airflow and prevent smoke spreading to other areas.

Routine maintenance on PPV fans ensures reliable performance and safe operation.

Checks should include inspecting the fan blades, guards, and casing for damage, ensuring there are no loose fittings, and confirming smooth operation. For petrol units, engine checks such as fuel, oil levels, and air filters are essential. Battery and electric fans should be checked for cable condition, battery health, and connections.

Delta Fire PPV fans should also be cleaned regularly to remove dirt and debris, and tested periodically to confirm correct airflow performance.

Any faults should be addressed promptly, and servicing or replacement considered if the equipment is worn or no longer performing as required.
