FAQs

Fire hose couplings are the connectors fitted to the ends of fire hoses that allow hoses to be quickly joined to other hoses, water supplies, pumps, hydrants, or firefighting equipment.

Their main purpose is to provide a secure, leak free connection that can be assembled and disconnected rapidly, even under pressure, ensuring an efficient and reliable water supply during firefighting operations.

Fire hose couplings are the fittings used to connect hoses to pumps, hydrants, and firefighting equipment, and they vary by region and application.

Delta Fire supplies a comprehensive range of couplings including 2½” Instantaneous Light Alloy Couplings to BS 336 used widely in the UK fire service, Storz couplings commonly used across Europe and on large diameter systems, NH/NST threaded couplings used in North America, Nakajima couplings, Barcelona couplings, UNI couplings, Guillemin couplings, SMS couplings, Machino couplings, and BSRT couplings. Delta Fire also provides a full range of adaptors and hose tails to ensure full system compatibility across different standards.

Fire hose threads refer to the threaded connection standards used to join hoses, couplings, hydrants, and firefighting equipment. These standards vary by region to ensure compatibility within local fire systems.

Delta Fire supplies a wide range of threaded systems including NH (National Hose) and NST (National Standard Thread), which are commonly used in North America, NPSH (National Pipe Straight Hose), and British Standard Pipe (BSP) threads used in the UK and many international markets. Other regional thread types include Guillemin and metric-based thread forms, depending on specific coupling systems and applications.

In the UK, most fire hoses fitted with 2½” Instantaneous Light Alloy Couplings to BS 336 are connected using male and female ends. One hose has a male coupling and the other a female coupling. They are pushed together locking lugs, creating a fast, secure, and watertight connection suitable for firefighting operations.

In other systems, the method varies. Storz couplings are sexless, meaning there are no male or female ends, and both ends are aligned and twisted a quarter turn to lock. Threaded systems such as NH or NST use male and female threads that are screwed together until fully tightened.

For 2½” Instantaneous Light Alloy Couplings to BS 336, which are widely used in the UK fire service, hoses are coupled by aligning the male and female ends and pushing them firmly together until the internal locking mechanism engages. To uncouple, both locking lugs are pulled out simultaneously, allowing the couplings to release and the hoses to separate quickly and safely.

Other coupling systems operate differently. Storz couplings are joined by aligning the two identical ends and engaging the locking mechanism, and then released in the reverse manner. Threaded couplings such as NH or NST are connected by screwing the male and female ends together and disconnected by unscrewing.
